Any Gamma World fans here? I used to play the first edition a lot and I own 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 6th editions (I think I got all those numbers right. Also have Gamma Knights.

I'm in Ohio, so I can't even try it, but my eyes boggled at the number of editions there are for this game. I mean, D&D is like nearly forty years old, spanning two companies, and is really only on it's fourth incarnation. And this one is up to six already? *blinks*

It's as if someone feels a need to overhaul the rules everytime there's a new printing. Of course D20 is responsible for 5th edition being dumped before it ever got off the ground. Suposedly Sword & Scorcery, who did the D20 6th edition, have let go of the rights. Don't know if that will mean another edition or what. I think most D20 players prefer to use Darwin's World anyway.

I've noticed that WotC have put out something called D20 Apocalypse which seems to cover a lot of the same ground as Gammaa World.

I wasn't actually looking for a game. I don't think anyone else is at all near me. I was just wondering if anyone remembered or played the game. It was always one of my favorites.

Can't stand the D20 anyway. If I were to play I'd probably do a GURPS conversion.

WoTC makes my head hurt. I hate what they did to D&D, and even after spending like $70 on the books, I still run and play 2nd ed.

Like many if not most gamers, i started with D&D. I went off it when I discovered better systems like Heroes and GURPS. I think D&D is an inherently flawed system and D20 didn't make it any better or worse. What D20 HAS done is killed a lot of inovation, creativity, and diversity as everyone jumps on it's bandwagon. It's the Windows of gaming.

*nods* I agree with that. I got talked into trying 3rd ed in several games, and they kept promising the more I played it the more I would love the new system and realize how wonderful it was. And the more I played it the more I realized the new system held me back. My feats determined what my character could and couldn't do, and the everyone has access to the same skills made us all a great deal more generic. I went back to the old system where your personality and personal creativity with the character was what customized you, and the various classes made us all work together. LOL

I don't think second ed is the be all and end all of gaming systems, it's just my personal fave. :) I also play with the Palladium fantasy and Rifts regularly, and have played Dead Lands and various White wolf games but neither were fun to me. I always wanted to play Shadowrun, but never found a game in my area either back in NJ or OH. Where are all the shadowrunners???? The closest I got was a fairly entertaining Sega Genesis game based on the world. White Wolf sucked all the joy out of my favorite legends. :( I"m happy for the people that like it, but it's not for me.

            I really am a fussy gamer. : )

I used to play Shadowrun a lot. I bought Vampire when it first came out and found it unberable pretentious. Never bought another White Wolf game after that.

The 2 things I hate most about D&D are Class and Alignment. These are core concepts that are in any edition. I find both of these ideas contrived and restricting. I can't see D&D ever droping these ideas, so I can't see myself playing it again.

I liked the ideas of the classes, but we use alignments as a general guide to describe our overall morality, not a restrictive straitjacket kinda thing. It wasn't until the crazy feat system from three that I felt any kind of restrictions on my character based on my class, but I can see your point of view on the alignments.

I prefer a skill based system where you can build exactly the character you want. Way back in D&D first editin (if there is such a thing) I had an idea for a character with assasin skils but who used his powers for good. D&D wouldnt' alow that. I like being able to have a character who is great with a sword, knows how to pick locks, and knows one spell (for example.)

I'm with You Dominic. Skill based systems are the way to go. give me a good GURPS, FUDGE, or Hero System game over a class/level based game any day. If I had my way I would never play D&D again the only problem is all the players I know seem to love the game so I play. I own the players handbook, and i enjoy playing any game, but I prefer skill based games for the same reason you pointed out.

Classes pigeon hole a character and apply limits to it before you even start playing it. It also tends to make some character ideas impossible. Alignment is the same. There is no alignment feature that can not be taken care of with a disadvantage from one of the games I mentioned above. Why force a character to take disadvantages?

As WotC said when the first anounced the Open Game Licence, D&D is like Windows. Most people use it not because it's the best system, but because it's the system they already know.

For some maybe, but as much as I've branched out (Deadlands, Rifts, Palladium, Babylon5, Vampire(1 whole game of Werewolf before I ran screaming from the crazy people trying to LIVE the freakin' game, silly me who thought that was limited to vampire the masquerade), and Star Wars/Star Trek), I still like D&D best for one simple reason, it's where I have the most fun. :) And no one tries to make me LARP.

LARPing is for geeks. :) Seriously, though, I think most people have a geek threshold. That is, no matter how geeky you are (and I am very geeky) there is something that makes you say, "That's too geeky for me." In my case it's LARP and collectable card games.

I liked magic until it turned into a huge crazy money fest. When it was like one set a year, and they didn't have to get stupid coming up with new card ideas, it was fun. I haven't played in years though with actual cards, I just mostly play the computer version(the old one, not the online weirdness where you pay for cards you don't ever actually own, how the hell did they convince people that was a great way to spend thier money?) with my son and husband to pass rainy days. :)

Larping bothers both my geek threshold as you say and my "I'm lazy, I want to loung and have fun with my freinds' nature. LOL

cool thing about magic, is that you can give it up; then years later when someone you know gets addicted, you can mercilessly stomp them for months.

                > The 2 things I hate most about D&D are Class and Alignment

For me, D&D's big loosers are:

                - Class/Level & HP systems, as a set
(the petite elven maiden (4'11", 95 lbs) has MORE HP than the half-ton WARHORSE she's riding, just 'cos she's a 7th-level Fighter???)

                - Vancian magic -- fire&forget takes on a /whole/ 'nother meaning, and I REALLY dislike it.

                - Alignment I /used/ to hate; now I mostly use it as a vague descriptor, except for classes where alignment is a core feature (i.e. LG Paladins; clerics matching their Deity). I /still/ hate the notion of "hardline" alignment play.

Unlike many others here, though, I find d20 an improvement over prior ed's of the game.
I prefer other games for my "lo-tech fantasy" RP, but when I /DO/ do D&D these days, it's d20.

    <raises hand>
GW 1e was the first RPG I ever played; we played it and AD&D1e for 3 years or so.
Met the young woman I'd eventually marry over that 1st game of GW! Still married, 3 kids (5, 11, 15), still game. :-)

GW 4e is the GW that we play, when we play now... but I don't like GW so well for "campaign" stuff, and that's where most of my interest is these days, so we only do GW on occasion, for 1-shots or short arcs.
