Since all my gamers in my two groups are cheap, I end up supplying paper stand-up figures. I've used the City of Heroes/ City of Villains costume generator and taken screen shots for PCs and NPCs. I've also combed the internet and shamelessly pilfered illustrations and photographs for use as stand-ups as well. Taping pennies inside the bottom works to weigh them down and keep them where they need to be for the most part. I've gotten a few snickers from one guy, but he's kind of elitist about most things so that's nothing new. Most folks think they're quite cool.

they're great actually.

the only problem is that all the cool scuplts are pricey and hard to get like Mind Flayers, Beholders and the like.

You can get alot of commons fairly cheap though!

How about D&D miniatures? They seem pretty cool, and fairly cheap ... less than $1 each.

And pre-painted. :)

And they come with stats. That's actually in some ways the best part. :)

they're not cheap.

I was just illustrating that due to my miniatures addiction, I'm not in a position where I think about how to find cheap figures.

seriously; you should come up with a less expensive plan. Unless you only want to collect the lamest of the lame Heroclix figures.

Re: Cheap Ficgures for your Role Playing Games
my method back when this was a concern for me (I've since started collecting heroclix, and horrorclix; plus I have loads of Heroscape figures (I was always more intersted in the terrain from that one) and a few others) was to find the gaming store in town that was struggling under the weight of its lead miniatures and dig through their Bargain Bin.

Cheap hero Clix figures? ok, thanks i should have thought of this

Out of curiosity, I searched Ebay for : lot, Metal, Miniature,

I found a number of good bargains. One was a lot of 60 metal Dwarves with a reserve of $10. they were all already freed from their flashing on stands, and primed! I bet you could at least find some decent pieces to fill out your ranks, though I'm sure Mind Flayers, Beholders and the like will be harder to get off people, but I doubt you'll have a lot of competition on those bids.

good luck, and keep us posted!

sadly, this isn't as easy a situation to stumble across anymore. the trends in modern gaming make miniatures a rare commodity. Most younger gamers are buying games the likes of which I listed above that come with pre-painted plastic minis (most notably from your inclination~ AD&D Minis) and video games are squeezing out table top games in general: as VG stores open, RPG stores close down.

Searching Ebay isn't a bad idea, as You might find someone trying to offload their classic lead minis cheap (I lost mine in a hurried move ages ago... I wish I hadn't!)

!!! I remember doing that!

Which reminded me of the WAY old D&D figs from back in 1978, like the huge pig-snouted orcs. Hell, at least they looked like the drawing in the first Monster Manual!

Oh, Achbar, also try poking around on EBay. You can run into some really good deals occassionally.

Check out sites with free download sections, like DriveThruRPG. It won't take that long to accumulate some interesting, free cardstock figure flats. And even the ones you pay for are very affordable.
