I couldn't WAIT to get my hands on a Copy. That was it - sold.

I've played many MANY RPG's over the years (and Games Mastered loads more) but AD&D remains my first and only true love.

Upon saying that, we're now Playing Castles & Crusades (which is what AD&D SHOULD have evolved into).

A friend of my mother got both of us involved when I was 14 with D&D. That Christmas I got the D&D Red Box and Gamma World. We played with a regular group for about 2 years after that. Then high school and my penis took over and I drifted away for a bit.
Once I joined the Navy on '86 and got assigned to a school command in Connecticut I started getting back into it. It was on and off from them until I got married in '91 and moved out of the barracks. Started again in '94 and it was on and off again until late '98. It was then I founded one of my current groups here in the Puget Sound Area.
We currently play GURPS and Savage Worlds-based adventures with some Battletech b/g mixed in for variety in my southern group. The northern group is currently playing Savage Worlds: Iron Kingdoms, and before that it was Savage Worlds: Slipstream.

When I hit about 8th grade I kept hearing rmors about such things. Older kids were playing something, there wiere miniatures that could be painted too. And dice. Strange dice. I was intrigued. I never got to play much except once, something vaguely similar except we were super hero types I think? I can't recall the name. V&V maybe?

Anyway, teased was all I got until high school. Then it was on. The D&D books crept in to my life and obsessive character making began. Most books were borrowed. Man those were a chore to decipher, but fun! AD&D DMG had tables for everything under the sun, arcane and cryptic terminology, everything a growing inquisitive mind could want. I think I only actually played one game of D&D in my first high school, but I also acquired the Cyberpunk boxed set, and Star Trek, and even a smattering of Star Frontiers. Most games were some homebrew with one other friend as a player. Then I moved to California and met the current crowd of gamer geeks, freaks, and other assorted non-conformists. We played everything, especially my all time favorite to date: Shadowrun! Cyberpunk 2020 was a close second for frequency, but also D&D, Call of Cthulhu, Car Wars, and the first run of White Wolf's products. It was officially ON.

I began my role playing back in 1977. Hell, I was a horny 14 year old who read too many fantasy novels. The game had much appeal. One could become a hero in an evening.
Now, James Webb Morrow is 45 years old, with his own home and a live in Girl friend. Monday nights are my gaming nights. We have 8 players in this game cutting up and making the most of a week night.
Much has been said about the up coming 4th edition of Dungeons and Dragons. In truth, I have been one of those who have said things about this game. Do I like it? No. Am I going to buy the Game? Yes. ( smile)
In my very short 45 years of age, I have met few people who are regular players of Role Playing Games. Different RPGs appeal to different
tastes. Most Role Playing Games are enjoyed on the computers. Look at World of Warcraft and EverQuest. People are more familiar with these games. Playing on a computer is very easy. It is not so easy to get people to meet with you face to face and go through the motions of making a character and learning a New World.
Call me a self admitting system snob. In truth, I prefer games that are simple and will allow me to get the players in the game fast. There are a number of games that will allow this.
What got you into Role Playing games? What are your players like? What is your Game Master like? Believe it or not, the players and game masters make the game. It is not the system. We could talk about Dungeons and Dragons all day. It does not matter. much the same could be said of GURPS.
What keeps you from joining so many hundreds of thousands of online people? Yes, you could play both, but I know people who ONLY play the online games and never the table top versions. Role Playing Games, what got you started?
