What's your favorite game system and why? Anyone who has read my few posts here can guess that mine is GURPS. I like the versatility and freedom in the character creation especially.
And as a follow up, what is your favorite game setting? Regardless of what rules system, what worlds do you find the most interesting and fun to play in? Mine are Shadowrun, Earthdawn, and GURPS Autoduel. There was also a Heroes game I was once in that was quite a lot of fun.

Thu, July 20, 2006 - 12:51 PM2nd edition D&D, specifically the Forgotten Realms. It's a lovely, wonderful world filled with interesting things and endless possibility. Not to mention a richly detailed area for those of us lacking time to create our own(read: wife, mother, with a job and a new house), but areas left blank if time arises or those who like to create.
Ravenloft is my next favorite, becuase I love scary/creepy things, but I don't dm it well at all. I lack a fear factor. I don't think I write good horror stories, I've tried once or twice. I'm better at being scared and lower my disbelief to let it in than dishing it out. (I think the theme shows that one of the things that most excited me about the new house is that I'm like only two doors down from one of my favorite seasonal haunted houses!).
I also like Rifts, but it's a rather unbalanced game. We run into all sorts of interesting problems with the system itself playing, but it's fun. Every anime ever al squished into one world. :)
I really liked Babylon 5, not just becuase I was a large fan, but the game system itself really downplays dice and tactics and uplays roleplaying, my primarly love of the genre in the first place. I hear the original Star Wars was like that also, but I'm not enough of a SW fan to find out. -

Thu, July 20, 2006 - 2:46 PMShadowrun for setting, and the 4e version is great for the tech in the setting (best idea for Matrix I've ever seen, though I would combine it with hardwired stuff, rather than have everything be wireless). Dice-wise, so far, I really do like the d20 for what it offers. It's similar to Cyberpunk 2020 (Stat + Skill + die), which is fairly easy to work with in a combat system. I've seen systems that are more flexible to allow you to customize your character as much as possible, and I suppose as much as I like SR3 for that, I have to take my hat off to GURPS for ultimate freedom. Playability I haven't tried, so I wouldn't know, but chargen for customization..that does a body good.

Thu, July 20, 2006 - 3:02 PMYeah, I remember the screams of outrage when the winds of change blew into that game. Rather like the screams of agony over the White WOlf Armageddon. As if Dm's can't continue to make cool adventures and continue on as if nothing had happened becuase the company changed something. It's why i still run and actively am looking for a 2nd ed game to play in. Just cuz it's not coming out with new material doesn't mean that DM"s brain suddenly short circuited. LOL

In the past couple of years, though, I've really enjoyed the d10 system behind All Flesh Must Be Eaten, partly because it forced my players to focus on character development rather than powergaming.

Mon, September 24, 2007 - 2:35 AMI think my favorite system is probably the WoD system; I've always thought that White Wolf struck a really nice balance between elegant simplicity and realism. I've seen some people say that the WoD system was easy to get bogged down in and became really numbers-intensive, but I've never experienced that. Of course, I play primarily with 2nd Edition core books and use almost no supplements. I also have a nasty habit of ignoring any rule I dislike (bad rule! go back in your closet!).
My favorite setting is Shadowrun, hands down. What a wonderful blend of science fiction elements and fantasy, magic and technology. And I always found the history compelling. But in general, dragons with cybernetics = hot.
A close second is Rifts. An absolutely wonderful setting with a horrific, flawed system. What an unfortunate pairing. What I like about the Rifts setting is that while it has a distinctive flavor, it's also theoretically possible to incorporate almost any creature or element from fantasy, science fiction, or mythology that you fancy.
I'm also a big fan of Hollow World, which I think was an original D&D setting (I honestly don't remember now; it may been 2nd Edition). There's just something about a thriving ecology in the interior of a world that I like. Also, throw Red Steel in there, cause swashbuckling is fuuuuunnnnnn. Oh, and speaking of swashbuckling, I nearly forgot Spelljammer. A little light and not terribly well designed, but flying naval ships through space is great fun (and who can resist the allure of a nice Mind Flayer Nautiloid?).

Thu, July 20, 2006 - 3:06 PMyou won't find my favorite system on a shelf. Its called "the Drajwahn Key". We've been playing with it and adding to it for 15 years or more. If you havn't guessed, it was created by two friends of mine. One is the Tribe Infamous (and your very own tribe TOU watchdog) Lokifreign; and the other is a systemic genius named Stanley Boyd Eaton the third. The system is universal, much like GURPS, in that any setting may be applied to it, and the rules are flexible but solid enough to handle anything. Its all based on a system of averages on a bell curve. ie: an average result is most likly in most cases. There's a three tier system: Avocations, Complexes & Slots... well you get the idea.
Favorite setting? I'm not so big on Fantasy. I'm more of a Sci-Fi player. I enjoy a good superhero game; but my favorite campaign of all time was called "the Inner Hand Wars" and was a space opera style Classic Sci-Fi setting based on the books of Cordwainer Smith.
Now there's something you can pick up off the shelves! I highly recommend his works. in fact, you can get them all in two volumes! (three if you count the concordance) Look these ISBNs up on amazon. you won't be sorry you did:

Thu, July 20, 2006 - 3:43 PMAt the moment I'm really enjoying the d20 Black Company game I'm in. I actually hadn't read any of the books before starting on the campaign. I started on them a few weeks later and found we had captured the feel of them very well. Plus, having the card game Tonk to fill in down time when the GM is working with a split party is really cool. It makes it easier to keep meta game knowledge not an issue because everyone is concentrating on not getting skunked at Tonk instead of listening in on what's happening with the group they're not part of.
I'm also in a couple of GURPS games and one of the things I really like about it is how it encourages you to not have the "perfect" character. This seems to help construct an interesting personality to play. This is particularly valuable since we seem to do more role play of plot lines than monster killing in that system.

Neat. That's one of the reasons I listed "Inner Hand Wars" as my favorite setting. It was set in Corwainer Smith's "Instramentality Of Mankind" Timeline, and when we had played it, I had never read the stories. Once the game had ended, I read all the Short Stories and the Novel; and It was so rewarding! It was like I had all this insider information... and it was information only a handful of people in the world shared! I finished the Short Stories on a hillside overlooking a Canyon that went out to sea in San Diego. Very rewarding.

I got into GURPS because I wanted to create a Role playing Game for Warhammer 40K. GURPS seemed to ahve been the best system for the. The downside is thast I never got around to making that game.

For overall mechanics, probably BRP / RQ-II.
Combat & skills, success/crit & failure/fumble, all in one elegant mechanic.
Has some warts at higher-levels of play, but otherwise that 30-year-old
mechanic still outdoes the "modern" games...
d20 is OK, but overly-complex (and at that, it simplifies AD&D 1&2...)
For "universal" mechanics, I have a slight preference for HERO over GURPS,
but both are pretty good workhorses.
For magic, it's Ars Magica, hands-down.

I prefer game-worlds derived from the real-world; I just find 'em richer and more evocative.

GURPS for the incredible number of genre books and flexibility, resources statted for it, and the realism allowed. It also helps that I've been playing/running it for over seven years.
Savage Worlds for sheer speed and Over-the-Top capacity allowed for with the Action Deck, Adventure Deck and the "Bennies".
I have friends that run d20 and I'm not a big fan of that system. I like a system that natively uses dice that allow for a curve.
I ran SW and SAS/TriStat at last year's Norwescon here in Seattle and people loved them both. I don't count SAS/TriStat as a favorite as I've recently had a part of the rules broken off in my ass. Admittedly it's my fault as I allowed players to over-use the "Dynamic Powers" power. I suppose that barring stupidity and ignorance on the part of the GM it's a great system as well.
Settings/Genres: Star Trek (post "Undiscovered Country"), WWII, Modern Horror/Fantasy, E.E.Knight's Vampire Earth, Supers, and Fringeworthy (based on an RPG originally pub. about 23-25 yrs ago), in no particular order.

Tue, January 9, 2007 - 11:30 PMCurrently, I do most of my role-playing in the World of Darkness system by White Wolf, but I am also a long-standing fan of Shadowrun, and a die-hard fan of D&D (I'm a second edition throwback, though). I also love Harnworld, but can't find anyone else interested in playing it. :( I just picked up an old copy of Ars Magica today - another great game that nobody plays - in the hopes that when I've finished organizing TempleCon for this year I can make some time to run a campaign. I'm also dying to try Godlike, but haven't gotten the opportunity yet. -

GURPS, I like Dungeopons and Dragons. 3.5 is my favorite version. Systems hardly matter as much as a creative Game Master and Players

Tue, November 18, 2008 - 3:14 PMOne of my favorite systems would be the one used in Fung Shei. Initially, the archtypes kind of limit the character you can create, but as you gain experience, you can modify that character in almost any way you want. (OK, it would probably be difficult to convince the GM to let you have creature powers if your archtype didn't have access to them originally.) The thing I like the most is that it allows so much creativity in combat without a lot of rules. Facing down a mook? (low level bad guy) You can take him out with a right cross, deck him with a frying pan, bust a pool cue over his head, kick him below the belt, bowl him over with a frozen turkey, throw the 8 ball at his head and knock him cold, take him out with a roundhouse kick to the jaw--or just plain shoot him. And this isn't even all the possibilities

Favourite Ruleset at the moment is Castles & Crusades (wonderfully old skool).
I always had a thing for Krynn, as thats the world I've most 'played in' - but I use my own Campaign World when DM'ing.
