Question on scheduling games

SO...most of my gaming group is older (30's plus) and we can never seem to pull together a weekly or bi-weekly game, so instead of having an indeterminate time like every Monday at 7 I was thinking of actually scheduling 10 sessions up front with specific dates. Has anyone done this?

I have a game I finally managed to hammer beat the other players into agreeing to a sunday weekly game. once people get older (we're all 30+ too) scheduling problems are huge. especially once kids and family functions and other real life issues interfere all the time.

All I can say is try to nail them down to one night a week they will commit to. if they really want to game they will make the time.

This is always a problem. Some members of my goup have spouses, children, and erratic work schedules. One solution which has helped me greatly is not playing at night. We start gaming at 9am and play until about 5. You may even have to drop to one game a month.

our group treat it like church. we do it once a week or feel guilty.

Sometimes there are issues; but we miss very few sessions.

some things are more important than gaming. but really; how many things? Children that need you and work. does anything else trump gaming? even a significant other can wait while you game for one day.

one thing that helped for us was assuming that the whole day would be for gaming; from the time we could all get together until people started falling out. Planning it that way prevents any problems that might be caused by timing, and you get to start whenever the last person needed arrives (we have a rule that the GM and three players have to be present to begin)

Its all about the metagame man. Make rules for the real world. make tables for common events. (whenver dave's girlfreind calls, roll on the weather chart; whenever sally has to go pick up her kids check for random encounters... stuff like that) Make the whole day a vaction from standard reality. make it a holiday.

I don't seem to have a problem with scheduling for my games. We usually do it on Sat night at about 11pm. Most of my players are around 30. Most of us are die hard gamers to boot. That and I tend to make the game very interesting because I'm something of a novelty right now, a female DM.
    • Have you considered twice a month, at the same time(s)?
I've played Cthulhu alternating Sundays and it worked well, but game time was brief. We had 4-5 hours every other week. Needless to say, there was a lot done outside of the game sessions. GREAT GAME

Another option is 2 games running, alternating weeks, say a space game and a fantasy game. That way things don't get boring.

The best way to run a game that has 2 week breaks is a) cliffhangers or b) out-of-game time. Each session MUST begin on-time and when time is up, that 'episode' is over, so the OOG time can happen.

As a 34 yr old guy w/a 9-5 job, I prefer playing on a weeknight or possibly a Sunday night. Played in a Mage RPG on Sunday afternoons, and it was OK when it rained -- but otherwise I miss the outdoors & sunlight of the weekends too much.

So Wed nights 8-midnight, or 6-11pm or something? :D

Well, for the group that I'm in, everyone knows beforehand that Sat from 2-7 is the time. Keep it simple - if you find yourself negotiating for times too much, I think it might be too much work and/or get confusing, which will increase the likelihood that it won't happen at all.

I also can't see any weekday nights (except Friday) working very well, especially for commuting or early morning people.

I've also been told by other GMs that you can't be shy about asking for a solid commitment. Generally, if people are interested, they will make the effort, but too much resistance without a good reason is a bad sign. They've kicked people out for missing too many games and in these cases, it's basically boiled down to the group sitting the person down and explaining that *really wanting* to have time for gaming is different from actually having enough time.

That being said, nobodys perfect, so expect to lose at least one or two people every few sessions.

    My 2 cents, anyway.
